Public urged to comment on cycle lanes, walkways in Heideveld area

Six streets have been earmarked for construction that will make it safer for both pedestrians and those using non-motorised transport in the Heideveld area.

The City of Cape Town is calling on locals and affected parties to have their say on the proposal before Wednesday 5 July.

The aim is to build “universally accessible” walking and cycle lanes in Heideveld to improve the safety of all road users and significantly improve road safety for both pedestrians and cyclists.

The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate is rolling out various programmes to provide safer, more accessible non-motorised transport (NMT) spaces identifying 4th Avenue, 5th Street, Klipfontein Road, Falcon Road, Zenith Road and Heideveld Road as part of the project.

“We urge Heideveld residents to please send us their comments and recommendations on the City’s plans to expand the NMT network to improve road safety for pedestrians, cyclists, wheel-chair users, people with prams and school children.

“This expansion includes footways, cycle ways, signage and intersection improvements that are universally accessible.

“With the communities’ input, we can ensure that the improvements and infrastructure we implement best suits their needs for enhanced safety and access,” says Urban Mobility Mayco member Rob Quintas in a statement.

Quintas explains all of the City’s NMT projects are selected and implemented according to the NMT masterplan.

“(This plan) focuses on building universally accessible walking and cycle lanes to improve the safety of all road users across various areas in the city,” he says.

“This project aims to link the NMT network in Heideveld to neighbouring communities; create safe, universal access within the area, and to improve access to public transport facilities and stops. This specific NMT project will connect residents to Klipfontein Road, the public facilities and schools in the area, as well as the Vangate Shopping Mall.”

Should this project receive the green-light, construction will commence in October next year, with completion earmarked for June 2026.

Quintas says the City is prioritising the NMT improvements across the city.
