Platform created for youth to tell their stories

DS Productions will host two productions in the Athlone area in an attempt to bring life to young people’s stories.

With Mama Cry and Power of Story telling (P.O.S.T.) coming up later this month, DS Productions founder Dennis Stander says they hope to also raise much-needed awareness.

“The motivation behind Mama Cry is to shed light on pressing societal issues, spark conversations, and provoke introspection. This play aims to inspire positive change, challenge stereotypes and encourage a sense of belonging and freedom of choice within our communities,” he says.

About the Power of Story telling, he says: “Through the act of storytelling, individuals are empowered to reflect on their own experiences, challenges, and triumphs.

“The audience is then invited to relate to the storyteller on a deeper level sparking dialogue, breaking down barriers and fostering empathy.”

Arts, as an outlet for youth, is one of the motivators for his organisation.

“These programmes, we believe, are crucial for the youth, as we look to build self-confidence, nurture critical thinking and most importantly a positive outlet to express. Developing well-rounded individuals and ultimately enhancing the quality of life,” he says.

Stander is well-known in the arts and acting industry, directing various productions and appearing in a variety of roles, including Arendsvlei.

“We’ve worked all over Cape Town, primarily focused on the Cape Flats. However, we are based in Athlone and primarily do most of our work there,” says Stander.

“The age group that attended our masterclass ranges from 20 to 65 years old. Age is no barrier.”

Ticket sales for Mama Cry will also raise funds for Mitchell’s Plain locals Jayden and Hayden Moodley. The boys are avid darts players.

“When their parents asked if there was any way we could assist with raising funds for their trip to Gibraltar, to assist them in their goals of being on the world stage, we didn’t hesitate.

“It’s amazing to see these two teenagers have such passion for their sport and still excel at school,” says Stander.

The organisation has also partnered with Walk In The Shoes Of Survivors (WITSOS) NPC.

Founded by Reverend June Dolley-Major, Celesthea Pierang and Andre Schaffer, the organisation offers counseling, trauma care, and court support to victims and survivors of gender-based violence.
