Cannons Creek Independent Primary School, on Thursday 25 September, captivated audiences with its enchanting production of The Adventures of Charlie Bucket, an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved classic Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. The performances, which took place from Tuesday 17 until Thursday 19 September, featured all Grade 1-6 learners and were directed by Terri Theys, the school’s primary drama teacher, with musical arrangements by Gail Levitt, the primary music teacher.
The story follows young Charlie Bucket, a boy from a humble background who finds a golden ticket granting him a once-in-a-lifetime visit to Willy Wonka’s legendary chocolate factory. “This production is a perfect choice as it resonates with audiences of all ages,” stated Theys. “Charlie Bucket’s journey reminds us all of the importance of hope, kindness and imagination. In a world full of distractions, this timeless story offers a moment to dream big and believe in the impossible.”
The production showcased a variety of talents, incorporating singing, dancing, acting, choral performances and poetry. The full dress rehearsal on Monday 16 September was a special event attended by Pre-Primary pupils and local retirement-home residents, fostering community spirit.

Feedback from those who attended was positive. Kay Coetzee, Chair of the Brown & Annie Lawrence Home Residents’ Committee, expressed gratitude, stating “the residents who attended the concert applaud you all and say a heartfelt ‘thank you’. It was wonderful to see every learner involved in the performance. The colourful costumes and boldly designed sets added to the drama.”Parents also shared their enthusiasm. Marion Kritzinger remarked: “We really enjoyed the show; the acting, dances, set design, and costumes were all fantastic. The confidence of every single kid on stage is just mind-blowing! Bravo to everyone!”
Sara Thackwray praised the collaborative effort, noting “I thought it was so creative. I take my hat off to the staff for combining Grades 1 to 6. What an accomplishment. Well done to everyone.”
This remarkable production not only highlighted the learners talents but also strengthened community bonds, showcasing the importance of creativity and collaboration in the arts.
