Locals can get a first look at Athlone ‘85 – a captivating film that tells the story of a student’s rebellious actions during the 1985 anti-apartheid uprising on the Cape Flats.
The film is inspired by true-life events. A premiere screening of the film will be held at the Artscape Theatre on Thursday 20 February 19:50.
The production is from the Bridgetown Theatre Company (BTC) in collaboration with Gemini Twins Films.
It follows the successful screening of TV series Melody, on SABC2.
The cast, made up of Celeste Williams, Zoey Daniels, Brandon Mack, Vincent P Nel, Riedwaan Damon and Suaad Herman were all part of an open call auditions in June 2023.
Director of photography is Jay Marias. It is produced by Jamiel Philander and written and directed by Theo E Davids.
Zelda Hintsa, marketing manager for BTC, said at the time that open call auditions produced great talent.
Four main roles, six supporting roles and 180 extras were cast from the more than 300 locals from the Cape Flats areas who auditioned on the day.
The screening of the film was made possible through the help and generous support from the Artscape CEO Marlene Le Roux and its board of governors.
This 100 minutes film is the pilot episode of the Athlone’85 TV drama series that will consist of six episodes of 48 minutes. This series will go into production later this year.
The screening will also be an opportunity for audience and communities to participate in a charitable activity.
Donations of non perishable food and clothing items will be accepted at the screening.
These items will be distributed to destitute and needy families and communities.
Set on the Cape Flats, the film portrays relatable struggles that resonate with a modern audience, making it entertaining and educational to a global audience. It tackles unspoken dark thoughts and shows how a few can destroy a community and how those problems can be overcome.
Nel says: “Everyone wants to live in a world where they feel safe and where they can optimally contribute to the wellbeing of society and the economy without fear.
“This is the story that will show viewers how the actions of a few can destroy this dream for an entire community but it will also show how these difficulties can be dealt with.”
Tickets are available via Webtickets at R50 per person.
