Provincial police are appealing to the general public for information to identify the remains of a decomposed body found at Silvermine Nature Reserve on Tuesday 4 June.

According to provincial police spokesperson WO Joseph Swartbooi the decomposed body of a man was discovered at the nature reserve.

“Kirstenhof police responded to a complaint on Tuesday 4 June,” he said. “The officers proceeded to the crime scene located in a nearby nature reserve.”

Questioned whether the body could be that of missing Steenberg father Alistair Stanbull, a City of Cape Town employee who was last seen on Monday 29 April, police responded: “The circumstances surrounding the incident cited in your enquiry are still under investigation.”

He was last seen leaving on a hike at Silvermine Nature Reserve, where his vehicle was found. At the time a large-scale search involving multiple law-enforcement agencies yielded no trace of the missing man.

Meanwhile, police confirmed the body found earlier this month was that of a man.

“They found the decomposed body of an unknown man dressed in a grey pants and T-shirt with black boots in a stream next to the hiking trail,” said Swartbooi. “The victim was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel.”

He added an autopsy would be conducted to confirm the cause of death.
