Police retrieve body from sea at Mouille Point in Cape Town

The body of a man who washed up at Mouille Point on Sunday (yesterday) has yet to be identified.

Emergency services on the scene where the body of an unidentified man was recovered from the waves.


  • The body of a man was found washed up at Mouille Point near the Putt-Putt mini-golf course on Sunday.
  • The Sea Point police, assisted by the NSRI, retrieved the body and registered an inquest docket.
  • Police are conducting a post-mortem to determine the cause of death and are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the deceased man.

The body of a man who washed up at Mouille Point on Sunday (yesterday, 15 July) has yet to be identified.

The body was seen floating in the waves by a member of the public near Mouille Point Putt-Putt course.

The police Diving Unit retrieved the body from the sea at about 11:30.

Sea Point police registered an inquest docket.

Cpt Cyril Dicks, communications officer for Sea Point Police Station, said a post-mortem would be conducted to determine the cause of death.

“We don’t have any names or age at this stage.”  

He refuted claims of missing body parts.

“I was on the scene. I saw a whole body. He had his arms and legs attached.”

Nicola Jowell, Ward 54 councillor, says police deployed two divers along with safety ropes to retrieve the body.  

The body is of a middle-aged adult male. It will now be for the police to investigate the identity and the circumstances that had led to him unfortunately drowning. My condolences to any family and friends of the deceased man.

Craig Lambinon, spokesperson for the NSRI, referred all inquiries to police and said they were handling the case.
