Police arrested 9 287 Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) suspects for various crimes –including murder, sexual offences, and assault – between January and May 2025, says Gauteng Police Commissioner Dr Polly Boshielo.

During the same period, 150 perpetrators nationwide were sentenced to life imprisonment, and 138 received sentences of 20 years or more.

Boshielo urged community members not to suffer in silence.

This follows the court appeareance of Tiffany Meek (31) on Monday on charges related to the murder of her 11-year old son Jayden-Lee.

Jayden-Lee’s bruised body was discovered on the staircase outside his family’s home in Fleurhof, Roodepoort, in May – just hours after he was reported missing. At the time, Meek claimed her son disappeared after being dropped off that afternoon by his school transport.

Meek also criticised the police in various media interviews, claiming they were negligent in handling the case.

Investigators believe Jayden-Lee returned home from school on the day he went missing and was allegedly killed inside the apartment. They suspect Meek then attempted to stage the crime scene to mislead authorities about the circumstances surrounding his death.

Community members gathered outside the court ahead of Meek’s appearance, expressing anger and heartbreak over the boy’s death.

Meek remains in custody and is expected to appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court again on 18 July for her bail application.

Boshielo said that while police work 365 days a year to combat GBVF, they cannot be everywhere –particularly “in homes and behind closed doors.”

“Any type of abuse must be reported, and we urge community members, neighbours, and family members to meet us halfway in the fight against GBVF.”

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Gauteng regional spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane says the NPA remains committed to ensuring justice for victims in similar cases and will continue to hold perpetrators accountable.
