Police on the hunt for missing Kensington boy

Cape Town police officers are on the hunt for six suspects following the kidnapping of a six-year-old boy from his Kensington home this morning (Wednesday 17 August).

Shanawaaz Asghar, a Grade R learner at Hidayatul Islam Primary School, was snatched on the corner of 4th Avenue and 9th Street just before 08:00.

His father was about to take him and his two siblings to school.

Cheslyn Steenberg, chair of Kensington Community Policing Forum (CPF), says six men in two vehicles, a white VW Volkswagen and a silver Ford, were seen fleeing the scene.

The boy was wearing his navy blue school uniform at the time of the kidnapping.

Col Andrè Traut, provincial police spokesperson, says an investigation is underway.

“Six suspects fled with the victim and are yet to be arrested. Due to the sensitive nature of the investigation, we will not be disclosing any further information regarding the incident at this premature stage,” says Traut.

Helen Jacobs, councillor for Ward 56, says a community walkabout, starting from about 17:30 at the Kensington Civic Centre, will take place tonight to search for Shanawaaz.
