National Police Minister Bheki Cele launched festive-season safety operations today.
Kicking off at Lentegeur Police Station on Friday 13 October, a delegation of tactical and operational Police officers from various stations and units were accompanied by City of Cape Town safety and security as they converged on Hanover Park on an operation, before heading to Khayelitsha Rugby Stadium for the second part of the launch.
Residents in the area questioned the policy’s seriousness in policing what they refer to as a red zone. “You see people outside now, but once they are gone you will see no-one in the streets,” one resident said.
“We need to go back into lockdown now,” said another as the delegation left the area.

In a statement, police said: “The heightened police visibility is aimed at preventing, combating and, at the same time, countering serious and violent crime during the holiday season and beyond.”Residents continued that more police visibility of this nature was required in an area where people are dying daily.
