Police investigate shootings at Athlone Magistrates Court
Athlone Police Station is looking for suspects who shot two people on Wednesday 3 December

Athlone Police are investigating the shooting and killing of two men outside Athlone Magistrates’ Court earlier on Wednesday, 3 December.

Athlone Police Station spokesperson Sgt Zita Norman says the men were shot dead a few minutes apart.

A 32-year-old male was shot by unknown gunmen in a gold VW whilst walking to meet his friends after being released on R2000 bail at 13:44. He appeared in court for possession of drugs.

Six minutes later, a 31-year-old male was shot in the face and back.

Zita says the deceased was a court visitor. He was shot whilst running after hearing gunshots.

The incidents are believed to be gang related.

The shooting is the second at the court in four months.

On Friday, 5th September, a male was shot dead at 09:41 whilst entering the gate of the court passage that leads to the main entrance of Athlone Magistrates’ Court. He was shot twice in the back and head.

Zita says a case of murder has been opened.
