The burglary and theft at a Kalk Bay home and a robbery at Woolies Pool has highlighted the rise in criminal activity.
In a social media post, a property owner described how devastated he was that three valuable saxophones were taken during a theft at his home.
“I’m currently overseas – my Kalk Bay house was broken into yesterday – a lot of stuff was taken, but my three saxophones were also taken – I’m so gutted,” he shared, last week. “If anyone sees or hears of these instruments for sale please contact me.”
The property owner identified the musical instruments as a New Yorker tenor saxophone with a Jody jazz mouthpiece, a Buffet Crampon super dynaction tenor saxophone in a “funky” black carry bag covered in stickers and a Yamaha alto saxophone YAS 61 with green detail.
According to Fish Hoek police spokesperson WO Peter Middleton, several items, including a car and motorcycle were stolen from the property in Kalk Bay.
“This office can confirm that there was a case reported on (Sunday) 9 June related to a burglary and theft of a motor vehicle that took place, where musical instruments as well as a motorcycle was stolen.”
He added that the motorcycle was later recovered close to the vicinity.
“The case is being investigated by detective WO Stoney Steenkamp; he is following up on information in trying to locate the musical instruments with all leads provided to this office.”
Middleton further pointed out that the incident occurred in the Fish Hoek policing area which borders on the Muizenberg policing area.
“There has been an increase of activity in the area,” said Middleton.
In a separate incident, the victim of an alleged robbery that took place at Woolies Pool, described in harrowing detail how she was forced to drive to an ATM.
“I was attacked and mugged at Woollies Tidal Pool on Thursday, 6 June,” she wrote on social media.
“When I finished my swim at about 10:20, I noticed a young lady at the tunnel entrance and didn’t think much of it. When I passed and had my back to her, she jumped on me and pushed me against the wall and onto the ground.”
Screaming at the top of her lungs, the victim claims she was threatened with a knife.
“She grabbed the watch off my arm, rummaged through my bag and took my cellphone and car keys. She then demanded to see where my car was parked and walking up the steps, I begged her to hand back my keys and let me go.”
Her ordeal, however, never ended there as the perpetrator allegedly instructed her to find an ATM.
“She threatened that if I tried anything her brother, who was waiting at the top of the stairs, would kill me. She took me to Kalk Bay ATMs but I was unable to draw cash there so she said to drive to Fish Hoek, all the while pleading with her to not hurt me.”
The victim later found an opportunity to escape, jumping from her vehicle and seeking help at a petrol station.
“I hope this creates some awareness,” she wrote of her experience.
WO Middleton confirmed that a case of robbery had been opened.
“This office can confirm that there was a separate robbery incident on 6 June at the Woolies Pool and is also being investigated by detective WO Joe Scheepers of Fish Hoek Police.”
No arrests have yet been made.
