Residents of Glencairn Heights, near Simon’s Town, are at wits’ end about having a pedestrian walkway implemented at the Glencairn Expressway.
According to Pamela Gush, who has been a resident for more than 21 years, the need for a pedestrian walkway has become critical.
“We have a lot of traffic and it is very difficult for people who work here to not have a pedestrian footpath or bus stop, their lives are in danger.”
Gush first approached People’s Post in January 2020 to highlight the issue.
However she says nothing has been done since.
“This road is an Express Way, so it is a very busy road and my worry is that pedestrians have nowhere to walk.
“Also, we had a bus stop at the beach, further down and there were toilets and everything and then it was demolished for a parking lot that was put up there.”
When People’s Post visited the area last week, pedestrians walked on the side of the road, some waited patiently for vehicles to pass, before they crossed the side.
“As you can see there are council workers working further up the road and they have to walk on the side of the road, you see how fast these cars are driving?
“There is no pedestrian walkway and it is simply not on. I have been fighting for years. I have approached the councillor and it was promised, but nothing was done, I’ve spoken to the roads department, but nothing.”
Ward 61 councillor Simon Liell-Cock said people are not adhering to the speed limit and there needs to be enforcement.
He added that the speed limit on the Express Way has always been 90 km/h with it decreasing to 60 km/h at Glencairn Heights.
When it comes to a pedestrian walkway Liell-Cock commented: “Between Gelncairn Heights and Glencairn Beach there isn’t a lot of people who walk to the beach and when it comes to expenditure, it has to go according to priorities.”
