A Parkwood family lost all their belongings after a fire gutted their home on Sunday 10 March.

With nowhere to sleep, the family of six is currently broken up, with three children aged one to 14 staying with relatives while their parents stay separately with neighbours.

Ward 65 councillor Donovan Nelson called for urgent assistance for the family, with food and clothing top of the list.

“A family lost everything in a terrible fire last night (10 March),” he said. “They are in urgent need of food, clothes and a helping hand to rebuild what they have lost.”

Michelle Pretorius, a neighbour who lived opposite the family in Erics Walk, Parkwood, said the fire began in the late afternoon.

“On Sunday afternoon around 16:00, we heard someone shouting that there was something burning, and then we went to take a look it was our neighbour’s home.”

The fire destroyed all the family’s belongings as well as another neighbour’s wendy house.

“They have no clothing or shoes,” Pretorius said, “and the neighbour who lost her wendy house needs new material to rebuild.

“Luckily no one was home at the time of the fire.”
