When they chose the name three years ago, they did not know the impact it would eventually have.

On 27 April 2020, during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, Vannie Hanover Park was born.

Now three years later, what better way to celebrate than with some cake – after a workout, of course.

On Freedom Day this year (Thursdays 27 April), faithful members young and old attended the commemorative event at Blomvlei Community Hall to celebrate the organisation’s anniversary.

“On Freedom Day 2020, we decided the name would be Vannie Hanover Park,” says founder Glenn Hans.

“We do health and fitness in the community, making people aware of the importance of health and fitness.”

Before cake and celebrations, the attending members had a workout.

There are around 120 active members, with ages ranging from four to 78 years.

They train Monday to Sunday and have been an opening act for the local arts festival, visited most of the hiking trails in the city and competed in several run/walks. They have also visited the Castle of Good Hope and trained on its roof.

Hans, with the help of brightly clothed club members, has also used the platform to promote other important issues such as dumping and waste clean-ups, HIV/Aids awareness and community upliftment.

“I am so proud to be part of this amazing project,” he says.

A birthday bash will be held on the field in Cowboy Town later this year.
