A public participation process is underway to convert Bay Road in Mouille Point into a one-way.

The proposal is to turn a section of Bay Road into a one-way between Fritz Sonnenberg and Rothesay roads. The directional flow would be from Fritz Sonnenberg towards Rothesay.

According to the City, its transport network development department received numerous requests for this section of Bay Road to be turned into a one-way to improve traffic flow.

Rob Quintas, Mayco member for urban mobility, says an investigation was then undertaken to determine the feasibility of the proposal.

“Upon investigation, the team established that residents have difficulty accessing and exiting their respective driveways along Bay Road and that by changing Bay Road into a one-way it will improve traffic circulation with the provision of formalised on-street parking. We ask that residents please consider the motivations for this proposal, and to submit their comments as soon as possible.”

He says the public participation process is in compliance with Local Government Municipal Systems Act.

The act states that the public and interested parties or groups must be given the opportunity to submit comments, recommendations or input on such proposals to the municipality.

Jane Meyer, co-ordinator of the Mouille Point Ratepayers’ Association, says they are in favour of the proposal.

“We support a one-way in the section of Bay Road between Fritz Sonnenberg and Rothesay roads. The one-way direction should be from Fritz Sonnenberg towards Rothesay Road.”

Meyer says congestion is a major issue in this road due to cars parking on both sides of the road and cars travelling in both directions.

“There is barely enough space for cars to pass each other. On large event days at the DHL Stadium, this will also assist with getting traffic out of the precinct and help to avoid traffic congestion and backlogs.”

Mia Mc Clelland, who works at Health on Point Pharmacy, says she is in favour of the proposal as the road becomes congested at times.

“I would approve of the one-way because there is a lot of traffic regarding people parking on the side of the road. I see a lot of congestion there, especially in the afternoon with people trying to leave or get to their apartments.”

Keith Gilmore, a resident in the area, says: “I would rather have it stay as it is. It makes life less complicated for me.”

The process will take place over the next month. The closing date for comments is Thursday 9 June.

Residents and interested and affected parties can submit comments as follows:
