Brig Jan Alexander, the new Station Commander at Mitchell’s Plain Police Station, comes with a wealth of experience but is looking forward to building a very strong partnership within and with the community of Mitchell’s Plain.
He started on Thursday 1 December.
With the festive season upon us, he is appealing to residents in the greater Mitchell’s Plain to be more vigilant at all times and to make sure to report any suspicious behaviour and actions at the police station.
“My advice to everyone during this festive season is to be crime-aware and to the parents of Mitchell’s Plain, ensure that you take good care of your children. Some of us are going on holiday and here are some safety tips to keep your home and possessions safe.
“Always make sure that your home is properly locked and secured. You can make use of the help of your neighbours know to you and always have a trusted individual stay in your home while you are away,” he says.
Deployments
Alexander completed his police training in 1988 at the Bishop Lavis Police Training College.
He was afterwards deployed to different police stations in the country before starting office in Mitchell’s Plain.

- Eastern Cape Bisho / King Williams Town
- Cape town police station
- Bellville police station
- Cape town cluster office
- Lansdowne Police Station
- Steenberg Police Station
- Nyanga Police Station.
The challenges in Mitchell’s Plain are murders, robberies and gangsterism.
Committed to strong partnerships
Peoples Post asked him to describe himself in five words and explain why he chose those words.
“I’ll start with discipline. Over the course of my career, I have learned that discipline is one of the key elements to being successful as a police officer in the fight against crime.
“I am committed to building strong partnerships with people and in this case, to the residents of Mitchell’s Plain. I am also determined. as determination is of utmost importance when I set out to achieve goals and results. I am dedicated and I believe that focus and dedication are attributes that bring change when striving to attain enormous change. Lastly, I am motivated because being motivated and positive has always brought me positive results and outcomes,” he says.
What people don’t know about him is that he is also a minister who specialises in spiritual counselling.
To relax he takes part in fun walks and outdoor activities.
He is a gym enthusiast and likes dancing.
