Ocean View Neighbourhood Watch patrollers together with residents, police and members of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) bade a sad and heartfelt farewell to one of their members at a memorial on Thursday 9 November.
Sallie Daniels (51), the founder of the Uptown Neighbourhood Watch, tragically passed away on Saturday 4 November, after a short illness.
CPF chair Mansoer Ismail remembered Daniels as a “great leader” who was very active in the community.
“He was one of the founding members of the neighbourhood watch in Ghost Town, which is an area in Ocean View. Every morning, from 05:00, he would walk commuters to the taxi rank and in the afternoon he would assist learners walking from school.”
Ismail added that his presence will be sorely missed.
“He was on patrol every morning from Monday to Friday, keeping the community safe.
“After six years in the neighbourhood watch, he sadly passed away.
“I will always remember him as someone who was a great leader and a stepping stone for the next generation.”
CPF deputy chair Terence Daniels said the patroller’s legacy will live on.
“The somber atmosphere resonated with gratitude for Liepie’s (as he was known) dedicated service, as neighbours stood side by side in unity.
“His legacy lives on in the hearts of those he led, leaving his mark on the Uptown Neighbourhood Watch and Ocean View community. He will be missed.”
Daniels added that the patroller would always be remembered for his caring nature and leadership.
“Liepie’s absence will be deeply felt, and his legacy as a caring NHW leader will be remembered with great admiration.
“Our thoughts are with the Daniels family during this difficult time and we join the community in mourning the loss of a remarkable individual.”
