The revitalised and colourful space was revealed on Wednesday 14 August.

Ocean View senior librarian Marlene Davids explained the process and idea behind the initiative.

“The newly revitalised space features beautiful murals painted by a very talented artist,” she shared.

“In addition, we have refurbished the shelves, adding a colourful touch that complements the mural and enhances the overall visual in our efforts to highlight the importance of creating an engaging space for children in our community.”

Funded by Friends of the Library, the rejuvenation reflects the genres of fairytales, Disney characters and concepts.

“We believe that this project not only showcases the local talent but also underscores our commitment to the young minds we serve,” said Davids.

“Where there previously were no shelves, we have turned into a study section. We painted learning stations so that it is easy for parents and learners to find different topics for teenagers.”

The second section, upgraded, includes the “1 000 stories before school” project.

“For younger children, we have the 1 000 stories before school project, an initiative across City of Cape Town libraries, which is aimed at books moms can read to their unborn baby in the womb,” explained Davids.

“We want to imprint a reading culture in children and parents. So we are pleased that the new space is visually appealing where children can relate to characters in the books.”
