Health practitioners will soon benefit from the new Nursing Centre for Learning and Development (NCLD) based at Groote Schuur Hospital.

The facility was officially opened on Thursday 12 May, which also marked International Nurses Day and falls in line with this year’s theme:

“Nurses: A voice to lead – Invest in nursing and respect rights to secure global health.”

The centre will cater for the learning needs of all categories of nursing staff.

Aghmat Mohammed, Head of Nursing at the hospital, says the aim is to provide high quality education and training which is readily available and responsive to the needs of all members of the nursing team within the organisation and those who do not.

“If someone at the day hospital needs training, our doors are open. We want to collaborate with them because it’s all about working as a team. Be it a day hospital, be it a GP practice or a community health centre we want to make sure that we all work together, identify the learning needs and do something about it.”

He says the centre will be integral in making sure continued learning development can take place.

“We have created 11 short courses. Learning and development of nurses will be facilitated by collaboration with our multidisciplinary team and higher education stakeholders based on learning needs. This is for one goal in mind and that is quality patient care. The key is to make sure health care practitioners can develop and update themselves.”

Mohammed says lectures will be facilitated, as well as short courses in health-related matters, clinical competency assessment and e-learning among others.

“Continuous professional development will become compulsory for nurses to be able to register and this centre will assist nurses in gaming those CPD points register.”
