A nurse accused of stabbing a Muizenberg police captain to death made a second court appearance in the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
Yanga Dunken Madolo (40) handed himself to the Lingelethu Police Station, Khayelitsha, after allegedly stabbing Capt Siphumeze Lusasa (37) on Saturday 21 January.
Madolo allegedly stabbed Lusasa, who was on standby, several times following an altercation at Epakakini Chilling spot, along Spine Road. He surrendered to the police the next day, Sunday 22 January.
Lusasa was attached to the Muizenberg Police Station.
According to Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani the case has been postponed to Friday 10 February, for a formal bail application.
Meanwhile, a memorial service for Lusasa was held in Muizenberg at Gallery South, on Thursday 26 January, where his colleagues paid their last respects.
Wayne Turner, Muizenberg Improvement District public safety director, who attended the service, said the slain officer was someone you could always count on.
“He handled the legal affairs at the office and joined Saps around 10 years ago. It was a completely devastating loss for us. I am an ex Saps officer, so this impacts us a lot. He was one of those people who were always happy for you and giving advice.”
Turner added that Lusasa was someone who “always had your back.”
“For us when you are fighting criminals it is important that you know your partner and that he has your back. You could always rely on him.”
In a social media post Turner commented that the killing of police officers must stop.
“Today we celebrate the life of a man who served his community well. An officer and a gentleman, Captain Siphumeze Lusasa, was remembered here in Muizenberg.
“A sad farewell by devastated colleagues and friends. Killing our police officers must stop.” He further described Lusasa as a true gentleman.
“He was a gentleman always willing to help. I spoke to him on Friday when I was on duty. I can’t believe it.”
