- Established by Catholic Welfare and Development, NOAH supports over 730 social pensioners with safe, affordable housing and holistic care.
Following the official launch of the Neighbourhood Old Age Homes (NOAH) Centre for Social Seniors in April, the organisation opened its Selling Seconds store in the area.
At the time of the launch, the organisation said it planned to open the store as part of its complete offering to the community based on the success of its centres in Khayelitsha and Woodstock (“NOAH opens new centre for social seniors in Athlone”, People’s Post, 16 April).
The Athlone store opened on Mandela Day, Thursday 18 July, and is situated at 26 Voël Street.
The store sells goods from reputable brands at a lower rate and also creates employment for residents. Officials say they are in the process of locating premises for this. These items are donated to the NOAH and sold as a form of income for the non-profit organisation.
Public benefit organisation
NOAH was established in 1981 by Catholic Welfare and Development (CWD), in response to the need for safe, affordable accommodation for the elderly poor. Starting with one communal home for social pensioners, this holistic model of support now ensures that over 730 social pensioners can continue to lead purposeful and dignified lives.
The renovated day centre is based at the Caritas Cape Town building in Lawrence Road and is a CWD public benefit organisation.
While NOAH was founded by the Catholic Arch Diocese of Cape Town, it now caters to all.
The Athlone store is open from 09:00 to 15:00 Monday to Friday and 09:00 to 13:00 on Saturdays. The store is closed on Sunday. This is also a cashless store and only card or snapscan payments are accepted.
