Newlands mourns the passing of beloved Avenue Cafe owner, Mr B

Musthtaq “Mr B” Bhatkar, owner of the famous Avenue Cafe in Newlands, passed away suddenly at 72.

Mushtaq Dawood Bhatkar, affectionately known as Mr B, died on Sunday 13 October at the age of 72 after battling mobility issues.

His body was laid to rest the same day, in line with his family’s faith and traditions. His son, Shabeer Dawood

, reflected: “My dad was an amazing man with the simplest approach to life, whether it was with family, friends or the community.”

The Bhatkar family has been a cornerstone of Newlands since 1929, establishing the renowned Avenue Cafe, famous for its samoosas and home baked goods. As the second youngest of 10 siblings, Mushtaq became a guiding light for his family. “We took guidance and wisdom from him,” Dawood shared. “His death was very sudden and a shock, “but we find comfort in the words ‘From God we came, to God we will return’, believing he was granted the highest place in heaven.”

Mr B was a cherished figure in the community. Known for his ever-present smile and warm demeanour, he created a welcoming space at Avenue Cafe that attracted generations of loyal patrons. Vanessa Raphaely, a long-time Newlands resident, described the loss: “Mr Bhatkar, beloved by generations of Southern Suburbs and specifically Newlands families, passed away suddenly.

“He was the friendliest person on the planet, whose cafe has been a beacon of community enterprise and warmth for my entire lifetime.”

Old Boy

Beyond his role at Avenue Cafe, Mr B was deeply involved with South African College High School, one of the prestigious schools in the Southern Suburbs, where his sons were alumni. “He was given the Old Boy honorary, even though he wasn’t an alumnus himself,” said Dawood, highlighting the deep bond between Mr B and the school.

Mr B’s warmth was reflected in his personal connections. Raphaely added: “He remembered everyone. Whether you had left Newlands to travel or emigrate, when you returned for his legendary samoosas he would ask how you were by name.”

Though his passing was sudden the Bhatkar family is determined to carry on his legacy.

“We still intend Avenue Cafe to remain a business as long as we can,” said Dawood. “We will continue the legacy as we assess matters.” Dawood promised that the vision for Avenue Cafe will live on.

As Newlands mourns the loss of this community legend, Mushtaq “Mr B” Bhatkar will be remembered for his warmth, kindness, and dedication to the people he served.
