  • The by-election for Ward 58, necessitated by the resignation of former councillor Katherine Christie, is set for Wednesday 28 August, with voter registration now scheduled for the weekend of 20-21 July.
  • The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) postponed the original registration weekend due to severe weather conditions.
  • Eligible voters in Ward 58 should visit their registration stations with valid identification to register or update their details.

Following the resignation of former Ward 58 councillor Katherine Christie, revised dates have been confirmed for the area’s by-election, calling local voters to cast their ballots on Wednesday 28 August.

Christie was sworn in to serve in the National Assembly on Friday 14 June.

Due to severe weather conditions in the province, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in the Western Cape has decided to postpone the upcoming voter registration weekend for the three by-elections scheduled to take place on Wednesday 28 August, announced Michael Hendrickse, provincial Electoral Officer.

Other by-elections will take place in Cederberg and Stellenbosch.

The registration weekend for the upcoming by-election will now take place on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 July.

The number of registered voters in Ward 58 is 20 883.

Citizens 16 years and older, as well as voters’ resident in the affected wards, are requested to visit their registration stations to:
  • Register to vote;
  • Check their registration details / status;
  • And to update their details if they have relocated to other areas.

To register, eligible voters in the wards must be in possession of either a green barcoded ID book, a Smartcard ID, or a valid Temporary Identity Certificate.

Importantly, all registration stations have remained the same. The stations in Ward 58 wards will open at 08:00 and close at 17:00:

  • Claremont Primary School
  • Rosmead Central Primary School
  • 1st Wetton Scout Hall
  • Batavia School
  • Rondebosch Boys’ High School
  • Rosebank Junior School
  • Voortrekker High School

The proclamation of the by-election is scheduled for Monday 5 August, which is also the opening of candidate nomination and also the last day for voter registration for the by-election.

Voter registration will continue online and at the IEC local office during office hours until the voters’ roll for the by-election closes on Monday 5 August.

Hedrickse advises voters to “take note of the weather conditions before heading to the registration venues in case the circumstances change again”!
