The Lions Club in Mitchell’s Plain showed how sensitive they are to the specific needs in their community when they donated baby boxes filled with goodies to the mothers.
The club, with 15 members, celebrated its fifth anniversary in October. And as a non-profit organisation (NPO), the club relies on donations to do its work.
“As part of the largest service organisation in the world Lions Clubs International, we concentrate our projects around hunger alleviation, diabetes awareness, conservation of the environment, assisting with improving the lives of the vision impaired and providing support for the needs of children and families affected by childhood cancer,” says Bevil Lakay, spokesperson for the club.
Lions Clubs International aims to have a club easily accessible to all communities.
“The leadership within our District 410w saw the need for a club in the community of Mitchell’s Plain. The needs in our communities are great and it’s not always easy to assist all. But we do as much as we can with the resources we have,” he says. They are looking forward to hosting their Environmental Bag-a-Burger project next year.
“We and children of a particular neighbourhood in Mitchell’s Plain clean up the area. We provide the children with a burger and also a talk on how to conserve their environment. This will be the first event in the new year,” Lakay says.
