As part of its annual Muharram outreach, humanitarian organisation Nakhlistan cooked and distributed thousands of meals to communities in need on Sunday, 6 July, commemorating the 10th of Muharram and marking the beginning of the Islamic New Year.

A total of 45 pots of Aknie, each holding 130 litres, were prepared and distributed across the Cape Flats and surrounding areas, continuing a tradition that began 42 years ago with just two pots of food shared on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr in 1984.

What started as a small initiative by a group of friends determined to ensure no one went hungry on a sacred day has grown into one of the Western Cape’s most recognised community-based feeding programmes. Today, Nakhlistan is widely known for its large-scale food relief, emergency response work, and social assistance initiatives.

“The food was collected and is being distributed in areas where it is most needed,” said Nakhlistan in a statement. “We are grateful for the continued support from donors and volunteers.”

The name Nakhlistan, meaning “oasis” in Persian, captures the heart of its mission: providing relief where it is needed most.

In addition to its Muharram outreach, Nakhlistan runs regular feeding schemes during Ramadan, Eid-ul-Fitr, and Eid-ul-Adha. Its ongoing support includes monthly food parcels, soup kitchens, and basic essentials for struggling households.

Last year, in celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr, the organisation distributed more than 95,000 cooked meals, a far cry from its humble beginnings.

Nakhlistan’s work extends beyond religious observances. Whether it’s during floods, fires, or social unrest, the organisation is often one of the first to respond with emergency assistance. It also provides affordable burial services, helps maintain places of prayer, and supports community events that build solidarity and dignity.

As Nakhlistan celebrates 42 years of service, its mission remains guided by a simple but powerful principle: to show up for those who need it most.
