The National Prosecuting Authority in the Western Cape has expressed its shock after the murder of a Cape Town magistrate, describing it as a “loss to the judiciary”.
Provincial police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg confirmed that magistrate Romay van Rooyen was found dead in her home in Marina Da Gama on Saturday 10 September.
“The circumstances surrounding the death of a 50-year-old female in Red Roman Street, Marina Da Gama on Saturday afternoon at about 16:15 are under investigation.
“According to reports, the victim was found in her house by a family member. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel.
“It was established during the investigation on the crime scene that the victim’s vehicle is missing.
The vehicle has since been recovered in Mitchell’s plain last night.
“The unknown suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested,” says Twigg.
Muizenberg police have opened a case of murder for further investigation.
Meanwhile Eric Ntabazalila, provincial spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), sent condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
“The NPA would like to express its shock and deep sense of sadness following the loss of a former colleague and a dear friend.
“We would like to express our deepest condolences to her family, friends and colleagues.
“Her tragic death is a loss to the judiciary and the justice system as a whole.”
