A tip-off led police members to pounce on an address in Bellville South on Monday 24 June only to discover a hoard of motorcycle parts wrapped in a warehouse with an estimated street value well over R1 million.
Following the discovery, Provincial Saps spokesperson WO Joseph Swartbooi encouraged any person believed to be victims of motorcycle theft to approach their nearest police station and discuss the progress on their case with the Station Commander and/ or Branch Commander.
Swartbooi told People’s Post police arrived at the warehouse in Glucose Way around 15:45 when they discovered the hoard of motorcycles and bike parts.
“They found a consignment of dismantled motorcycles, which were all wrapped seemingly prepared for transportation purposes,” he said.
Messages circulated on social media suggested that this was the workings of a bike syndicate, stating that this “stash of stolen high end motor bikes due to be shipped out of the country”.
This was not confirmed by police as investigations are still in early stages.
Swartbooi, however mentioned, that the man spoken to at the premises could not provide a proof of purchase for any of the motorcycles or the parts found in the warehouse.
“The police members proceeded with the initial investigation which indicated that a number of the motorcycles were reported stolen on different SAPS cases. They arrested an adult foreign national on a charge of possession of presumed stolen property.”
The suspects made a court appearance in the Bellville Magistrate court on Wednesday 26 June on the mentioned charge.
The matter is being investigated by Bellville Vehicle Crime Investigation unit.
