Three suspects, including a 19-year-old woman, accused of murdering an e-hailing driver appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 9 June.
They joined nine others arrested for the brutal attack and murder of Abongile Mafalala (31) in Parkwood on Tuesday 31 May.
Grassy Park police spokesperson Capt Wynita Kleinsmith said the suspects were identified from video footage.
“She was arrested on Tuesday and on Wednesday two men aged 43 and 45 were also arrested, all three appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court.”
She added that the young woman was identified as one of the main instigators of the mob attack in which Mafalala was beaten to death and set alight.
Police are still combing through video footage that was widely circulated on social media. In one of the footage Mafalala is repeatedly struck with a spade and other objects as an angry crowd surrounds him.
According to police, the father of one was allegedly killed after false rumours of kidnapping emerged in the area.
The Grassy Park Empowerment Forum has since raised funds to go towards Mafalala’s funeral.
David Benjamin, one of the executive members of the forum, said they met with the family in Dunoon on Wednesday 8 June and handed over the money on Saturday 11 June.
“This morning the Grassy Park Empowerment Forum was able to pay over the donations made by kind Grassy Park residents over the past week,” he told People’s Post.
“Only R5 500 was collected, but this was graciously accepted by Abongile Mafalala’s family as our contribution to their funeral costs.
“Reverend Bougardt donated a magnificent casket worth R15 000 and his valuable time to do the embalming of Abongile’s remains for the funeral in Tsomo, Eastern Cape.”
He added that there are many good souls in Parkwood and Grassy Park.
“May the family find peace, and may the regeneration of Parkwood begin,” he said.
Mafalala is expected to be buried this coming Saturday 18 June.
