Growing the local community economy could be as easy as visiting a local monthly market.

The Mitchell’s Plain Community Market, in partnership with Ward 81 hosts a monthly market at the Dagbreek Community Hall on the first Saturday of each month, with local vendors selling their goods.

Ashley Potts, Ward 81 councillor, says this initiative is something they have been wanting to implement in the area since he took office.

“It’s always been a hope of mine to have the marketplace right here in the local community. We have so much of our local talent going to places like Milnerton and Muizenberg,” says Potts.

The kids play corner is a new addition to the market.

Having one closer to home reduces cost of travel and set up.

According to Founder of the Mitchell’s Plain Entrepreneurs Hub, Mitchell’s Plain community market organiser and Ward 81 entrepreneurship champion, Lucretia Splinters, the market attracts residents from all over the Cape.

“Markets get people together and supporting one another, getting the income flowing,” she says.

“People spend so much money going out of the area to find markets, when we can do it here. We need to get to a space where we support each other.”

The market has a six-month agreement, with space for 50 vendors at the hall.

The next market will be held on Saturday 1 April.

Clothing stall from local designer Design 26 sells both adult and kids clothing.

Cupcakes and sweet treats from Chelsea Baked It.

Food, crafts, toys, gifts, clothing and more can be found at the market.

“We need to support one another and grow the economic space and giving toward small market development,” says Potts.

“Come and buy what you need at the market, helping local entrepreneurs put bread on the table and keeping the money in Mitchell’s Plain.”
