Tomorrow, Wednesday 28 September, Brig Cass Goolam will officially bid the community farewell ahead of his retirement on Friday 30 September.
A community event will be held at Stephen Reagan Sports grounds from 09:00, starting with a run through the community backed by fellow police officers and runners from the Mitchell’s Plain Titans Athletics Club.
Having competed in several marathons including the Two Oceans and Comrades, his goal is to promote fitness among officers.
Turning 60 on Friday, having been at the Mitchell’s Plain police station for around a decade, his tenure may be coming to an end, but he says he will always have fond memories of the police and his experiences in fighting crime in the precinct.
Goolam and the group will be running eight kilometers starting at Kapteinsklip Train Station at 08:00 and follow through Tafelsig area via Kilimanjaro Street heading into Eastridge and Beacon Valley via Alpine Street, Imperial Street, Cadillac Street, Hengelaar Street, Kerrems Street and A.Z. Berman Drive.
Goolam also plans to pass the police station where he will salute the station management waiting for him on the steps.
This will be a symbolic hand over to the seniors on the steps. The run will then continue along First Avenue, left into Westpoort Drive, right into Park Avenue and ending at the Stephen Reagan sports grounds.
The event is open to the public.
The activities will include Zumba, soccer, gymnastics and other community sports.
