A rising soccer star from Masiphumelele has the opportunity to impress scouts in Sweden but needs financial support to fund this dream.

Emihle Tomose (18), a Simon’s Town School learner, is expected to join a hand-picked soccer squad for a week-long soccer tour in October this year, said his cousin Amanda Ngcaba.

The tour kicks off on Sunday 5 and ends on Saturday 11 October. During the tour they will play a handful of friendly matches with some of the best teams in Sweden.

“My dad Lindela Ngcaba helped Emihle with coaching,” said Ngcaba.

Ngcaba said the teen needs to raise about R35 000.

This will cover expenses like his flight ticket, accommodation, toiletries and his passport fee.

Emihle used to play central attacking midfielder for Noordhoek Football Club, Harvest Academy and the local teams in Masiphumelele and Philippi. He currently plays for Antalyspor JPM CT Football Club.

When he is not out practising his penalties, he enjoys reading and watching football matches.

Emihle lives in Masiphumelele with his mom, Yoliswa, his older sister Yonela Tomose and her son Ndalo. He said the love of soccer runs in the Tomose family’s veins.

“My uncle played as well as my aunt’s husband, who is a soccer fanatic. We would go and watch games at the stadium or go for a drive to kick ball on the soccer field. Whenever there are games on TV we will watch them together, him, his son and I, and with the noise and excitement one would swear it’s an actual soccer match underway.”

Emihle said his passion for the sport was ignited at age 7.

“It was at Fish Hoek Football Club that my coach, Dumisa Maraseni, first recognised my talents and invited me to participate in pre-season tournaments. Notably, my coach, who trained me at Khoza Square and coached me at Simons Town School, where I still play under his guidance, has played a significant role in my development as a player, and I believe his guidance has been instrumental in creating the opportunity to be recognised and touring Sweden. Soccer is my passion, and I’m dedicated to practising and learning from the game.”

He trains three or four times a week.

“My favourite soccer players are Cole Palmer and Desire Doue, and I support Chelsea and Kazier Chiefs football clubs.”

According to Emihle he qualified for the Sweden tour when he was seen by a scout during a local match earlier this year.

“I was scouted by Gareth Ncanca (ex-soccer player for Moroka Swallows and Mamelodi Sundowns) when I was playing a match. He spoke to my coach about how well I performed and wanted me on his team. The tour activities are still to be discussed. But my main focus is to train, keep healthy and make sure I excel so I am recognised, be it there or here as it will be a stepping stone towards my career.”

Maraseni said Tomose’s progress as a soccer player is inspirational to witness.

“As a coach I’d like to highlight his dedication, passion and perseverance in pursuing his soccer dreams. He has demonstrated his ability to adapt to different positions on the field, showcasing his flexibility and willingness to learn.”

According to Maraseni, Emihle serves as an inspiration to his peers.

“Emihle’s influence extends beyond his own career; he serves as a role-model for his cousin’s son and potentially others in his community.”

He urged the teen to continue pursing his dreams.

“I’d encourage him to continue working hard, stay focused and embrace new challenges. With his dedication and passion I have no doubt he’ll achieve great things in his soccer career.”

Said Emihle: “In this Sweden tour I hope to be recognised by bigger teams in South Africa and even Europe. My main goal is not only to pursue a career in soccer but also to make a difference at home. I haven’t won a championship yet but it is a goal, hence my performance, always aiming for the best. My current team winning matches is always a highlight. My cousin’s son, who is also an up-and-coming soccer player looks up to me. That is a life ideal I never want to lose.”
