Kensington police believe they have made a breakthrough against the scourge of drug trading in the area, following the arrest of a 40-year-old man for possession of dagga valued at almost R200 000. Officers conducted an intelligence-driven operation at premises in Factreton on Wednesday 19 March.

WO David Stemmit, communications officer at the station, said officers also seized R260 000 cash.

“The officers searched the premises and found a huge amount of dagga plants and dagga cigarettes with a street value of nearly R200 000, and cash to the value of R263 970 was also seized. Scales to weigh the dagga were also seized.”

Jameelah Liedeman, chair of the Kensington Community Policing Forum, said drug abuse remains rife especially among young people in the area.

“We are aware that many believe dagga is not a drug, yet very young children are becoming addicted to it, the go-to substance that leads to others. The amount of dagga and cash found on the premises is very shocking as it’s right under our noses. We trust that under the leadership of the station commander there will be more such operations in our precinct.”

Cheslyn Steenberg, Ward 56 councillor, expressed his gratitude to the officers. “This once again proves that our communities have hardworking police officers who are not appreciated.

“This operation sheds light on the ongoing strategic breakdown of our community intentionally by means of drugs.”

He called on residents to report all suspicious activity.

The suspect appeared in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on Monday 24 March.
