- Region chair Mark Rossouw emphasized the impact of the initiative, urging further donations to ensure every learner has access to essential reading resources.
On Friday 7 February, Lions District 410W Region E celebrated a milestone event with the official opening of the Heathfield Primary School Library and Media Centre.
This achievement marks the culmination of 13 months of dedication, as Lions clubs across the region worked together to collect library book donations for the school.
The Lions District 410W – Region E, which comprises 12 Lions clubs, partnered with Heathfield Primary School and the Light from Africa Foundation to bring the library and media centre to life. Their efforts resulted in an impressive donation of 4 520 books, helping to establish a well-resourced space for the learners.
Despite this success, the target of 6 000 books—needed to meet the Western Cape Education Department’s (WCED) standard of 10 books per learner—has yet to be reached.
A shortfall of 1 500 books remains, and organisers are calling on the community to help bridge the gap.
Region chair Mark Rossouw expressed gratitude for the collective effort behind the project. “While we’ve made incredible strides, we still need help to meet our goal,” he said. “This library is a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together. Now, we just need that final push to ensure every learner has the resources they need.”
The library’s opening ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Ward councillor Kevin Southgate, representatives from the WCED, former teachers, donors and Lions club members. The event was a vibrant celebration of the teamwork that made the project possible.
Rossouw reaffirmed the Lions’ commitment to sustaining and expanding the library’s impact. “This is not just about reaching a number; it’s about changing lives. Books open doors to new worlds and opportunities, and we want to ensure that every child at Heathfield Primary has that chance,” he said.
He encouraged the public to continue supporting the initiative.
“If anyone has books to donate, we welcome your support. You can contact the school directly at 074 217 2458,” Rossouw added.
With ongoing community backing, the Lions remain hopeful that the final target will soon be met, ensuring that every learner at Heathfield Primary has access to the books they need for a successful education.
