Library Week SA is celebrated from Monday 17 March until 23 March. The theme is “Libraries for Sustainable Communities.” This celebration highlights the essential role libraries play in creating stronger, more sustainable communities. Libraries across the country continue to support education, promote lifelong learning and offer vital resources for personal and community development.

Thobeka Zawukana, a librarian, explains: “Libraries are more than just places with books. They are places where people can learn, grow, and connect. Libraries offer access to resources that help individuals build a better future for themselves and their communities.”

Ward 77 councillor Francine Higham praised the contribution of libraries. She is also the Mayco member for community services and health.

“We recognize that libraries are more than just books; they are hubs of knowledge, lifelong learning, and community empowerment. Libraries offer access to information and digital resources. They support literacy and education. Libraries play a central role in our city’s development.”

The week-long celebration includes a variety of events aimed at promoting literacy, education and digital skills.

Local libraries are hosting workshops, storytelling sessions, and talks. These activities show how libraries help create more inclusive and accessible communities. They also promote sustainability.

Zawukana added: “Our libraries help bridge the digital divide by providing people with free access to the internet and technology.

“This is especially important for those who do not have access at home. It opens up opportunities for learning and personal development.”

The public response has been positive, with many residents highlighting how their libraries have been vital during tough times.

Libraries offer study spaces. They give internet access and host educational programs. Libraries are key to building stronger, more connected communities.
