Primary school learners from Steenberg learned vital environmental lessons at a fun interactive holiday programme held at Zandvlei in Muizenberg.

Ward 68 councillor Marita Petersen says the programme, which started on Monday 10 July and ended on Friday 14 July, was aimed at teaching learners the importance of taking care of the water canals and water bodies.

“We have two canals running through our area and it’s problematic when it comes to illegal dumping. One of the focuses of this holiday programme was to bring awareness about dumping and for everyone to take care of the environment and water bodies.”

Petersen added it was unfortunate that children did not learn these lessons in the education system.

“They have learned about our water bodies and that Steenberg is home to the leopard toads and the value of looking after our ecosystems as well as the importance thereof.

“I don’t think, unfortunately, that this is taught in our education system where children get to learn in a fun environment and that is how kids learn the best.”
