Sageda de Klerk, secretary of Fresh Start Cycling Club in Ocean View, says the learners aged from seven to 14 hail from four different schools in the area.

“We had 11 children, the youngest being seven and the oldest 14 from Marine Primary, Kleinberg Primary, Jupiter Street Primary and Ocean View Secondary schools.

“They were selected to represent Western Province based on the results of various races participated in. One of our girls, Zia Lamb, did very well as she won the overall u-11 girl’s medal.”

The tournament was held from Monday 10 July to Friday 14 July.

The learners train at the club every afternoon after school, weather permitting.

Abduragiem de Klerk, chair and coach of Fresh Start Cycling Club, says he is proud of all the learners’ achievements.

“Training sessions are every day, the younger ones, we take them to Soetwater twice a week to ride a circuit, it is round with turns and other times we take them from Ocean View to Cape Point.”

He added that learners are dedicated and determined, which is amazing.

“I am very proud of these kids, especially under the circumstances they are living in.

“They are dedicated and disciplined. If you say there is training then they are here.
