  • The event aimed to build confidence and inspire young women to pursue their dreams.
  • Mentors and girls shared stories, engaged in crafting activities, and connected on a personal level.

Family and friends from Hangberg, Imizamo Yethu, Masiphumelele, Khayelitsha, Philippi, Gugulethu, Nyanga and Langa only had praise for the event organised by the NPO Lalela’s Female Empowerment Programme at Bertha House in Mowbray on Friday 9 August.

A small group of Grade 8 girls from these areas participated in activities focused on identity, talents, challenges and dreams.

Lalela’s educational arts after-school programmes provide a platform for children and adolescents to explore their creativity in a safe and supportive environment, helping them develop the confidence and skills needed to excel in life.

“We invited women mentors from various sectors and the Grade 8 girls from our programme for the day to connect, create and have fun, which is reflected in the pictures.

“The mentors shared their journeys and wisdom and engaged with the girls in hands-on creative crafting activities. The mentors and the girls shared their stories, encouraging dialogue and learning,” says Linda Daniels, spokesperson for the organisation.

Paired together

Each mentor was paired with a small group of Grade 8 girls, participating together in activities. At the Women’s Day event, the creative potential of young women focused on building their confidence and inspiring them to pursue their dreams.

Lalela’s Female Empowerment Programme is one of the organisation’s most impactful initiatives, supporting young women from under-resourced communities as they transition into high school.

Rosie Dube, a parent, says it was a beautiful event.

“I really had such a great time and left feeling really proud to be a woman and to have been surrounded by phenomenal women and girls who are growing to become the change-makers of this world. I want to congratulate the team at Lalela for doing an amazing job.”

Mona Bango, who also attended, says she felt honoured to have been around the girls and interacted with them while having fun.

“We are excited to bring together these young women and invited mentors for a day that promises to be both fun and inspiring,” says Firdous Hendricks, Executive Director at Lalela. “Our goal is to equip these girls to stay in school and have the confidence to chase their dreams.”
