Shanawaaz Asghar (6) was reunited with his family late Thursday evening.

The Asghar family can breathe a sigh of relief after their six-year-old son, Shanawaaz Asghar, who was kidnapped earlier this week in Kensington, was found alive.

Shanawaaz Asghar, a Grade R learner at Hidayatul Islam Primary School, was snatched on the corner of 4th Avenue and 9th Street in Kensington just before 08:00 on Wednesday. The boy was reunited with his family late last night (Thursday, 18 August).

The Kensington Community Policing Forum (CPF), which has been in close contact with the family, confirmed that Asghar “has been found and is safe with his family”.

Cheslyn Steenberg, chair of Kensington CPF, says: “We can only thank the almighty for the safe return of Shanawaaz. I would like to thank everyone involved in this regard, it is appreciated. Now we have more work to do.”

Col Andrè Traut, provincial police spokesperson, says: “This office can confirm that the six-year-old Kensington boy who was kidnapped on Wednesday has been reunited with his family late last night. Our investigation is still underway and arrests are yet to be made. It is on this basis that further information regarding the case cannot be disclosed at this stage.”

Steenberg encouraged communities to work with police and not against them.

“Communities must do more to help community policing - working with the law enforcement agencies and not take a step back. We all have a part to play in the quest for a safer Kensington and Factreton. Let us stand up and take back our community from criminals.”
