Fifteen Pooke se Bos informal settlement residents have officially moved into their new homes with their families.
On Wednesday 8 March, the Mayco member for human settlements, Malusi Booi, handed over the keys to the residents who will be part of the group of 135 to take occupancy at the infill housing project in Gatesville.
The Breaking New Ground (BNG) homes have been built as part of the City’s R45 million Pooke se Bos infill housing project.
“The Pooke se Bos infill housing project is one of the City’s special projects as it provides opportunities for residents of the existing Pooke se Bos informal settlement in the area.
“Over the coming weeks, the City will be handing over more opportunities to the qualifying families and we look forward to doing so.
“We are committed to providing affordable housing opportunities to residents across the metro and we are ensuring that the most vulnerable residents are assisted,” says Booi in a statement.
“The project will be completed in June this year if all goes as planned and we thank the community for their ongoing support. Over recent weeks, more than 30 beneficiaries moved into their homes.”
BNG incorporates subsidised, rental and bonded housing.
“This is a special City project which will see opportunities being provided for the poor residents of the existing Pooke se Bos informal settlement. The City remains committed to ensuring that the most vulnerable Capetonians are assisted with affordable housing across the metro,” said Booi previously.
Ward 46 councillor Aslam Cassiem says all 135 families, who will be housed in this project, are from Pooke se Bos settlement.
“This project is the culmination of many years. I’m very pleased that the community is moving into decent homes they can call their own,” he says.
Cassiem adds that beneficiaries have been on the City’s Housing waiting list for 20 years or more.
A total of 40 homes have been handed over to date.
Construction started in October 2021.
