It was a morning filled with learning and adventure as learners from Kalksteenfontein Primary School enjoyed a trip to Robben Island recently.
The trip was made possible through a collaboration with Camps Bay Police Station and the Ignisive – ignite inclusive change, a Camps Bay based organisation.
The organisation comprises various entities from local government and police to businesses and residents.
Theresa Massaglia, co-founder of the initiative, said 39 Grade 4 learners were sent off to the island to learn about its rich history.
Massaglia said they want to keep the children motivated.
“It is important for us to support initiatives that help keep children motivated, through incredibly tough conditions, to remain in school and away from the temptations of street life. These ongoing cumulative efforts help broaden children’s horizons and instil hope for a brighter future.”
According to Massaglia, the day was also to commemorate the life of Alan Marsh, the co-founder of the initiative. She died last year
Massaglia said they hope to motivate the learners to become future leaders.
We need more Mandela’s and leaders to take things forward. We want them to see that they are not confined to their circumstances and that there are many possibilities out there.
Sgt Glynnis Bester, Crime Analyst at Camps Bay Police Station, who helped organise the trip, said as the country commemorates Heritage Day, they wanted to give the learners a glimpse of history.
“The purpose of the outing was so that they could see first-hand where Nelson Mandela lived and what his background was. To get a better understanding of who he was.”
Massaglia said the learners saw dolphins, a whale, and seals.
“They were so excited and enjoyed the bus trip and tour on the island.”
She said the group enjoyed a braai and some snacks after the trip at Maidens Cove beach.
“A few officers from Bishop Lavis Police Station prepared a braai for the kids. It was an amazing day. I want to give credit to the police as well. They (the police) always have a hard time in public, but they are incredible human beings.”
