At the recent Annual General Meeting of the Claremont Improvement District Company (CIDC), Deputy Mayor Eddie Andrews commended the organisation’s impact on the neighbourhood. “It is thanks to the CIDC that Claremont is what it is today,” he noted, emphasising the value the CIDC brings to the area through its commitment to cleanliness, security and community care.

The CIDC operates as a City Improvement District (CID) within Claremont, functioning as a Special Rating Area (SRA) that allows property owners, businesses and residents to fund additional services that go beyond the standard provisions from the City.

The additional levy paid by members enables the CIDC to implement extra measures in security and sanitation, directly contributing to a more attractive, safer, and well-maintained environment. This initiative has been linked to rising property values and improved public spaces, factors that have positively impacted Claremont’s livability and appeal as a residential and commercial hub.

The deputy mayor highlighted the importance of partnership between the public and private sector. He stressed that collaborative efforts among local government, business and community organisations can amplify positive outcomes.

“We recognise the value of partnerships and the importance of leveraging the resources we do have,” Andrews said. “By working together, we can achieve much more than we could alone.”

His comments reflect a growing awareness within the City Council of the need to combine resources and expertise.

One of the defining features of the CIDC’s operations is its inclusive membership structure, designed to engage local property owners in decision-making processes.

Safe, clean, caring

Members hold voting rights at CIDC meetings, ensuring their influence on priorities and strategies for the area. Non-members, though unable to vote, are encouraged to attend and share their perspectives, creating a platform for broader community engagement.

The CIDC’s activities are organised around its mission to create a “Safe, Clean, and Caring Claremont”. The programmes include routine security patrols, cleanliness drives, and community support initiatives, which together foster a neighbourhood environment. The organisation’s focus on active, responsive management of public spaces and resources has set a standard for CIDs.

The CIDC aims to continue its work through collaborative efforts, empowering the community to shape Claremont’s ongoing development. By leveraging the commitment of its members and fostering productive partnerships, the CIDC showcases the potential of local action in driving long-term urban growth.
