CAPE TOWN- Table Bay Harbour police have opened an inquest after the body of a man was recovered from the water at Duncan Docks this morning.
Police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg confirmed the man’s 5-year-old son was rescued from the water and taken to hospital in a stable condition.
Twigg said the circumstances surrounding the incident were still under investigation.
According to National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesperson Craig Lambinon, emergency services were activated at 10:05 following reports of a drowning in progress at D-Berth in the Port of Table Bay.
Lambinon said when crews arrived the child was already in the care of bystanders.
“A search commenced in the water for an adult male, believed to be the dad of the child, who had reportedly gone missing in the water in undetermined circumstances.”
He said during free-dive search efforts an NSRI rescue swimmer located and secured the body of the man, which was brought ashore.
