This year, the Beach Hut Trust is aiming to restore the Eastern section of the iconic Muizenberg beach huts which will have ramps added to make them accessible to everyone.
Angela Gorman, an activist from the Beach Hut Trust, said they started with a new campaign on Tuesday 28 December to raise funds to restore more huts this year.
“So far we’ve done five huts. The next huts we are going to work on is the Eastern stretch opposite the businesses. It will be the first Muizenberg lifesaving club. We also hope to create it into a ramped up hut that will be wheelchair friendly that is accessible to everyone.”
She says instead of two doors, the huts will have one door.
“At the moment, the huts have two doors, but we will change it to one door, with a ramp that will be wheelchair friendly. It can also be used for people who want privacy to change their clothing.”
Gorman says anyone can donate R100 towards the beach huts.
“The idea behind the campaign is that donating only R100, any person who works or has a job can afford it. We are continuing this campaign until the Easter weekend,” she said.
In 2019, the City of Cape Town received an R800 000 quote to repair the huts, but the City opted to do the repairs instead, painting, cleaning and using internal resources at a cost, excluding labour, of R110 000.
“We are raising funds to buy supplies and to save the Muizenberg Beach huts from disintegration.
“The campaign has caught the attention of the public as a community campaign. They are all keen to help, whether by donating time, manpower in the form of painting the beach huts, or suggesting they donate money to the project.
“We cannot let these huts fall apart and be destroyed. We have to save them. This campaign is to crowdfund to raise money and awareness for just that.”
