To honour fathers and the role they play in the community, 40 men were treated to an afternoon of fun and entertainment at the Schotsche Kloof Civic Centre in Bo-Kaap on Sunday 19 June.
The event was organised by the City’s Community Services and Health team.
Francine Higham, Ward 77 councillor, says: “The aim of the event was to bring all men in the community who are fathers, grandfathers or uncles together to celebrate the positive impact they can have within the community.”
Higham says guest speakers on the day included Imam Sheikh Dr Dawood Terblanche, Imam at Nurul El Houda Masjid, who spoke about the role and responsibilities of fathers within the Muslim religion.
A member from Cancer South Africa did a cancer awareness talk on issues concerning men’s health like prostate cancer. While local artist Mo George kept the crowd entertained.
Higham says the Bo-Kaap community is known for its rich culture and history.
“The Schotsche Kloof Civic Centre is a great facility in the heart of the Bo-Kaap which can be utilised for community events such as this one. The City of Cape Town regularly hosts events at this venue for youth and we wanted to ensure we were also engaging the men in the community as they are also important role models for our young people.”
Higham says they are hoping to host similar events in future.
“The community proposed that we should organise a family games night programme so that the families of Bo-Kaap can come together and play recreational games and activities.”
