A Hanover Park-based organisation established to assist women and children through empowerment and upliftment has treated a group of women to a Mother’s Day pamper session.

Family Support Movement, established in June last year by Evolino Adams, has been operating in the gender-based violence (GBV) and social work space since inception and felt the need to treat mothers who are going through a lot.

“I started the NPO to help women and children with the necessary support through upliftment and empowerment. Our women go through terrible abuse, so with Mother’s Day I spoilt a few with gifts to show them that there is support and that they are not alone,” says Adams.

“Many women tend to put each other down because of their circumstances and it breaks our confidence, so I wanted to get a group of women together to share with each other what they experience every day. Many of the mothers were heartbroken for various reasons on Mother’s Day and this initiative could allow them to relax a little bit.”

Adams says she has learnt to not let circumstances of people get her down and describes herself as someone with strong morals and values.

“As a woman, I believe you do not take the crown from another woman’s head. Women need to uplift each other so that the crown can always be visible, because life has a funny way of happening,” says Adams.

One of the women who was spoilt on the day shared her hardships. She has endured every form of abuse possible, says Adams, but her children and job keeps her standing tall.

“The fact that she could share her experience shows that she is on the way to recovery. Even if it takes her a very long time, she is showing that abuse does not have to break a woman.”

Adams thanked Colleen Simmers from Youth for Change, Christian Community Church reverend and her family for the time and contributions to the event’s success.

She continues her work supporting women and children and says the organisation is in need of funds to continue its work.
