No matter what time of year, the deputy chair of Naruna Estate Residents’ Association (Nera), Beverley Strong, is on a mission to provide comfort to Pumstead’s vulnerable families. This time she is inviting winter comforts.

“Once again, we need help as winter is here to provide support to those in our community struggling to put food on the table. It’s been four years on and still, we strive to help the most vulnerable,” said Strong.

So far, a heart-warming donation has been made to a portion of the young ones who were blessed with jerseys, matching beanies and bed socks by the caring Buzy Bees Knitting Group.

This donation consisted of 24 sets of paired jerseys, beanies and 28 pairs of socks.

“I run a knitting group of 27 ladies that knit on projects together,” one member not wishing to be named told People’s Post.

“Every year, at this time we give out to four or five charities. For people in Mowbray, we made 20 packs of baby sets, beautiful crochet blankets, teddies, jackets and leggings to match – all knitted – as well as toiletries.”

The Buzy Bees meet on Thursday mornings between 10:00 and noon, all associated with Connect Church in Meadowridge.

Other knitters

“But I’ve also got home-based knitters and old-age homes that form a part of the knitting club. The church finances the wool, and we also receive donations of baby wool which are much thinner four-ply and we all knit with double-stitching technique,” the kind woman shared.

Strong again appeals to the community for contributions of soup packets, tins, cups of soups or any other soup ingredients.

“Donations that could include any unwanted blankets or jerseys to provide much-needed warmth is also welcome,” added Strong.

She functions from her home at 33 Coombe Road.
