A group of women from Ward 75 have graduated from a hairdressing course aimed at skills development.
On Monday 7 March, 10 women were selected to take part in the course which was funded by ward allocation. A graduation was held on Friday 25 March.
The goal was to have them sharpen their skills and empower themselves.
A total of R100 000 was set aside by Ward 75 councillor, Joan Woodman for the project.
Most of the women had applied for the first course after the first was completed in 2019 and also registered on the Job Seekers Database with subcouncil.
“These ladies are now able to fend for their families by going from home to home to do hair and build up a clientele which will provide an income and food on the table. This project was facilitated by the City of Cape Town’s Social Development,” says Woodman.
“One of our local barbers, Marwaan Vraagom was part of the programme teaching the ladies how to do barber cuts and Cassandra showcased her skills by teaching the ladies how to work with Natural Hair.”
Each participant also received a starter kit which will help them start their own small business.
These items included a hairdryer, Silver bullet flat iron, shampoo, conditioner, brushes, combs, scissors, cutting cape, hair clips and a training manual.
