Golders Green Park in Woodstock now boasts a new multi-use netball and basketball court.

The R500 000 project includes swivel hoop poles and forms part of the City’s investment into netball and its ongoing investment post-Netball World Cup.

For the first time in history, the world cup was hosted on African soil in July this year.

Anroux Marais, provincial minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, said in a press release netball is a sport that is widely played across the province.

“We have produced many talented players over the years. Netball as a sport is also important for young girls as it teaches important life skills such as working as part of a team, strategising and planning ahead.”

Ian McMahon, Ward 115 councillor, said the courts will officially be opened by Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis in December.

He added that in the coming weeks, tiered seating will be added.

According to McMahon, other parks in the area will also see some upgrades but said this will be disclosed soon.

Resident Dimitri Mintsa, an avid basketball player, has been living in the area for the past three years.

He said the new basketball court will benefit the community as this is a first for the area.

“The closest one for us is at Battery Park at the Waterfront. It’s good for the kids. Now they have something to do after school, a safe place to hang out. I hope to start a basketball team soon. This is a good thing for the area.”

Mintsa said since the basketball court was erected, he now goes there three times a week to practice.
