CAPE TOWN-Christel House South Africa has launched its annual “Bucket of Hope” campaign, seeking community support to provide food security for learners and their families during the December school holidays.

The initiative aims to raise funds for 1 000 food buckets by Wednesday 10 December, ensuring current learners, incoming Grade 8 learners and vulnerable alumni receive essential nutrition during the extended school break.

Each R350 donation provides a Bucket of Hope filled with non-perishable foods and festive treats, addressing the critical gap when school-provided meals cease during holidays.

“Behind their bright smiles are children who, like so many of their classmates, depend on Christel House SA for the meals and snacks they receive every day at school,” the school explained. “For many learners school meals represent their only steady food source, making holiday support particularly crucial “when cupboards at home often run empty,”

Food insecurity challenge

The campaign addresses heightened food insecurity during the December holidays when families lose access to school-based nutrition programmes that provide stability throughout the academic year.

Christel House emphasises holiday food support ensures learners return to school in January next year “nourished, hopeful and ready to learn and thrive.”

The initiative recognises that academic success depends not only on classroom instruction but also on learners’ basic nutritional needs being met consistently.

Donation options

The campaign offers flexible giving options to accommodate various donor capacities: 1 Bucket of Hope: R350; 2 Buckets of Hope: R700; 3 Buckets of Hope: R1 050.

The campaign’s 1 000-bucket goal reflects the scale of need within the Christel House community, encompassing current learners plus new Grade 8 learners joining next year.

Including alumni who require support demonstrates the organisation’s continued commitment to learners beyond their school years, creating lasting community connections.

The initiative positions community members as direct partners in ensuring educational continuity through nutritional support.
