A Muizenberg family is raising funds to get their injured son home from Bali in Indonesia.
The family started a back-a-buddy campaign to assist local Nick Coetzee who suffered multiple fractures after a “terrible scooter accident” in Bali on Sunday 23 April.
His mother, Carol Coetzee, says the accident occurred within hours of Nick arriving in Bali.
“Nick had been in Bali for five hours and he was going to be there for 10 days when the scooter accident happened.
“He fell head first onto the tarmac so he has multiple fractures of the face and skull, luckily he wore a helmet.”
The 30-year-old underwent four hours of surgery on Wednesday 26 April and will need more medical care once he arrives in South Africa.
The surgery cost an estimated R500 000 and his family does not have the means to cover this cost.
“Nick had successful surgery on Wednesday and we are going to try and get him to South Africa next week. The surgery went well with fantastic surgeons in Bali.
“Their medical care and surgeons are fantastic so he is in good hands. We are so grateful that he is alive.”
Coetzee adds despite the challenges he is facing after the accident he is remaining strong.
“His spirit remains strong and he is determined to once again continue his work in helping others be the best versions of themselves.
“We hope that with the support of the community, Nick will get the medical help he needs to make a full recovery and continue his work in improving the lives of others.
“Every single donation counts towards his recovery. No amount is too small, so please do not hesitate to give what you can. Let us all come together and support a good cause.”
She describes Nick as “an incredibly kind and generous person” who is also “passionate about helping others” be at their best health.
“Nick has always had a love for animals, and he is the proud owner of a Jack Russel terrier. As a dog owner, Nick knows the importance of being active and taking care of oneself both physically and mentally.
“He is passionate about sharing this knowledge and experience with others to improve their overall health and well-being.”
